La Real Gran Peña (called the Círculo de la Gran Peña) is a private social circle located in the building of Gran Vía street (nº2) in Madrid. The building where the society is housed was designed by Eduardo architects Gambra Sanz and Antonio de Zumárraga, which was screened in November 1914 just when the Gran Vía was built. The society was created in 1869 by Spanish soldiers. Among the presidents of the institution, high-ranking military officers or members of the Greatness of Spain are usually elected. Among the most illustrious peñistas have been politicians like José Canalejas, and José Calvo Sotelo, as well as royals like Alfonso XIII, and since 1975 former King Juan Carlos I.
